Macro Photography : Beauty in the Air by RichardN

This lovely Tillandsia flower seemed to be at her beautiful best at first light! The plant belongs to the Bromeliad family and is an epiphyte, referring to one that grows upon or attached to another living plant. These plants (which are not parasitic) are sometimes called ‘air plants’ because they do not root in soil. The Tillandsia is found in the deserts, forests and mountains of central and south America, Mexico and the southern United States, for which reason I’m delighted to see they thrive in our part of southern Africa as well. Nutrients are gathered from the air (dust, decaying leaves and insect matter) through structures on the leaves called trichomes. Even though they grow without soil, they still require watering.
