Not only are these snowflakes some of my favourites from this year, they are also fused together in a beautiful way. The connected branches are stuck together by some random collision in the sky, but this happened when both of the crystals were still growing. These connected branches are smaller than the others, showing roughly the side of the snowflakes when they found each-other. They continued to grow outward after that point in a fairly similar fashion, even though their beginnings created very different features early on.
This snowflake took roughly eight hours to edit. I completed this snowflake a few days ago in preparation for Christmas (knowing I wouldn’t have time today), and it was an entire day’s work in Photoshop to create the perfect results you see. Why so much time? Partly because of the two crystals, but there was also some clutter on top of the crystals that required a bit of “reconstructive surgery” to clean up the image and keep it photographically beautiful. Would that make me a snowflake surgeon? :)
I love the large geometric center on the right snowflake, and it’s unlike any I’ve photographed before. The smaller center on the right snowflake isn’t without charm either, with hints of colour from thin film interference and beautiful fractal patterns leading out into the branches. The branches of each snowflake take on a far less symmetrical design, but I don’t think anyone will mind.
This is not the first time that I’ve photographed snowflake “pairs” or fused collections, but it’s not common to find and it’s much more time intensive to produce useful results. There may be another one or two such snowflakes before the end of this series, but I’ll save ‘em for special milestones if I have the time.
Wishing everyone an awesome Christmas Day! For those of you that were good this year, I hope you got what you asked for; for those that didn’t make the nice list… there’s always snowflakes, right? And for you can always get a copy of Sky Crystals if you didn’t find one under the tree! :) www.skycrystals.ca/ – the snow will be falling again very soon!
