The Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae. The butterfly is also known as the common yellow swallowtail or simply the swallowtail (a common name applied to all members of the family, but this species is the ‘original’, first to go by the name). Crassula portulacea is a succulent bush found in the semi-arid Karoo area of South Africa. It’s juicy leaves are eaten by grazing animals, while the tiny star-like white or pinkish flowers that appear in winter provide a welcome burst of colour at this time of the year.
